Tap to pay on iPhone: Now UK Citizens can experience Contactless payments
Apple's Tap to Pay on iPhone, which was introduced in the US last year, is now being launched in the UK. This feature enables iPhones to function as portable payment terminals for businesses and can be set up easily with a compatible mobile app. With this, merchants can accept payments through digital wallets, credit cards, and debit cards on their iPhones without needing any extra equipment.
To use Tap to Pay, merchants must have an iPhone XS or a newer model. They also need to download and set up a payment app from the App Store that supports this feature. Initially, the payment platform will be compatible with Revolut and Tyl by Natwest payment platforms. In the upcoming weeks, Apple Store locations throughout the UK will offer this service. Later on, support for Adyen, Dojo, myPOS, Stripe, SumUp, Viva Wallet, Worldline, and Zettle by PayPal will be added.
“We’ve seen Tap to Pay on iPhone transform the checkout experience for so many different types of businesses, and we’re thrilled to now support merchants across the U.K. by offering an easy, secure, and private way to accept contactless payments using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone, with no additional hardware needed,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet."
After being set up by merchants, Tap to Pay will enable them to accept NFC payments from customers simply by tapping. Apple proudly emphasizes that it offers the same level of payment data protection as Apple Pay, utilizing Secure Element encryption. It's important to note that specific transaction details, such as the items being purchased, are not shared with Apple.
